People Who’ve Changed Me: Part 60

Dooley Noted: 2/11/2016

The Person: Paul Pivarnik

His professions: strength coach, massage therapist

How I met him:
I met Paul through my business partner, Jason Kapnick, when Paul and Jason were both strength trainers at a different facility.

Paul participated in the Deck of Death, 52 rounds of kettlebell brutality in honor of Kapnick’s birthday.

After that day, I knew Paul was not only serious about the kettlebell but was seriously strong and a great mover.

How he has changed me:

Paul has logged thousands of hours as a coach, and he has more expertise in the field than many coaches I’ve met.

But he has zero hubris.

He is always on the quest to pick up a new external cue or a better understanding of what authentic movement should feel like.

He is always acutely aware of the coaching around him, picking up things he can use or cast off.

Most importantly, he focuses on the his own quality of movement as a priority, so that he can lead by example.

He combines mobility work with strength and stability work so that he is not just strong but moving well through his years.

He honors me by trusting me with his clients when they are in pain, and he puts them right to work to make pain a priority that must be addressed.

He just received his massage therapy license, so he could further dedicate his efforts to helping clients commit to health.

Paul’s work ethic, dedication, and eagerness to learn should be emulated by all people – inside and outside the strength world.
