Peddling Downhill

Dooley Noted: 8/7/2014 Many patients come to my office because they have constant muscle tightness. The conversation happens like this: Patient: “I don’t understand why I am always tight.” Dooley; “Do you stretch?” Patient: “Yes, all the time.” Dooley: “Does it help?” Patient; “For a moment, and then it comes back again.” Dooley: “What if that tightness is functional?” Stretching when something is tight may not be the answer. If tightness is not resolved by … Read more

On Jetlag

Dooley Noted: 8/6/2014 Tonight, I start my flights to a different continent on a different hemisphere – for the second time in five months. I am heading to Melbourne and Sydney to teach NKT I and the very first NKT II in Australia. The trip to Oz in March saw me with no jetlag on the way over. But in all honesty, I literally slept the entire way there. The trip home saw me awake … Read more

Unfulfilled Expectations

Dooley Noted: 8/5/2014 While flying, I read People magazine. One might consider this fluff reading, or even reading that distracts from one’s own life. I found it educational! The magazine featured two different reality television stars. They had one thing in common. They each gave their dutiful watchers the appearance of a perfect marriage, perfect family, and, naturally, a perfect life. They were each devastated by cheating husbands. They were beyond angry. The perfect image … Read more

The Unforgiving Learning Process

Dooley Noted: 8/4/2014 Some of my colleagues are regarded as experts. When you talk to them, they will assure you that they aren’t. But they might not let students in on that secret, for fear they’d lose their captive audiences. And it’s a viable fear. Leaders are leaders for a reason. They have a thought process admired by others. But I guarantee you this: Any “expert” worth his or her salt is still learning and … Read more

The Machines that Run Us

Dooley Noted: 8/3/2014 Many of you may not know that I used to be a mystery shopper. It basically put me through college, chiropractic school, and grad school. My favorite evaluations were of the casinos. I found them to be fascinating in every imaginable way. I was required to spend money at slot machines to evaluate the slot attendants. I would spend the minimum required. Poverty made me risk averse. For the last three days, … Read more

Who’s Crazy

Dooley Noted: 8/1/14 None of you will be surprised that I traveled to Vegas with an 18 kilo kettlebell. As I lifted it off the baggage carousel, a group of three women commented that it looked heavy. I smiled and replied, “Nah. It’s about 40 pounds.” One whispered audibly to the other, “That’s CRAZY, traveling with that.” This reaction is not foreign. I get the same look at least 10 times from passersby as I … Read more

Feed and Be Fed

Dooley Noted: 7/31/2014 A few nights ago, I came home after not seeing my boyfriend for a few days. I had been teaching, treating, and learning every moment I was awake. While asleep, I dreamed in brainstorming mode. I was tired upon returning home after a 15-hour workday. And when I opened the door, he had prepared a very nutritious meal for us. This inspired me so much, because I had spent my day feeding … Read more

One Deep Breath

Dooley Noted: 7/30/2014 I had the honor and privilege of watching StrongFirst candidates perform their snatch tests last weekend. For a female over 123 pounds, the snatch test requires the candidate snatch a 16 kilo kettlebell 100 times in five minutes. You can chalk only once. Every rep must meet strict standards, or it’s a no-count rep. These guidelines are non-negotiable. A candidate on my team expressed that she had asthma. Having worked a bevy … Read more

The Strength of a Woman

Dooley Noted: 7/29/14 The first woman to ever make me feel strong was my mother. She grew up on a farm. She worked in a factory. Her body was pretty jacked. She didn’t eat much. She was always moving. She put up with no one’s bull. She showed me that people will think what they want. She told me to mind my own business. She told me to think for myself. When a boy canceled … Read more

Assisting at StrongFirst

Dooley Noted: 7/28/2014 Your life can change in two years. I’m living proof. I was a fairly standard chiropractor, doing muscle releases and manual adjustments. It was fun and effective. Then, the kettlebell entered my world. A cannonball with a handle turned my world upside down. Workouts were no longer workouts. They were events in skills training Chest and leg days were over. Bicep curls were only done in the bottom of a squat to … Read more
