The Fate of a Missed Flight

Dooley Noted: 11/7/2015   This week, Monday through Friday, I worked 90 hours.   In a five day span, I trained four times, in line with my program.   After my long Friday workday, I trekked to Newark to make my flight to Phoenix, where I would attend a seminar – instead of teaching one, for a change.    I missed my flight.   First, I cursed my fate.   But on the long train … Read more

The Ruined Candy Bar

Dooley Noted: 11/6/2015   In college, I used to love a certain candy bar.    I was so obsessed with it that I would make drives to certain gas stations to find it.    But one fateful college night, my candy bar would be ruined for life by the man who shared its name.    He was beautiful. I did not see myself as such. And he was at MY apartment – at MY party.  … Read more

Diamond in the Rough

Dooley Noted: 11/2/2015   My thesis advisor used to refer to me as a diamond in the rough.   I used to focus too much on the “rough” part, not hearing his intentions.    A year after obtaining my masters in anatomy, he came to visit my gross anatomy and neuroanatomy lectures and labs.    He told me I shone like a diamond.    I told him how it used to bug me that he … Read more

Teaching to Your Audience

Dooley Noted: 11/1/2015 I’m a good teacher, learning how to be great. I’m learning how to resonate with my audience. Today, I was shuttled back to my high school history classes, when I went to see the Broadway show, “Hamilton.” The story was a modern pop/rap/musical interpretation of the history of Alexander Hamilton. I was embarrassed to remember only one major fact from high school: this man was shot by Aaron Burr. Lin-Manuel Miranda took … Read more

Halloween Treats

Dooley Noted: 10/31/2015 It’s Halloween. It’s a holiday. I’m actually in town. I probably should have taken the day off. I considered it.  But I was pulled to Catalyst SPORT for a rare opportunity to treat patients before the night of fun. I’m so thankful that I did. I could have missed out on affecting lives of my patients bad getting these amazing two emails while front squatting. Email 1:  “Just wanted to say again … Read more

Orthopedics and Turf

Dooley Noted: 10/30/2015   This week, I had a colleague laugh at me when he saw me wear my Catalyst SPORT shirt.    He saw the O in SPORT stood for “Orthopedics.”   He scoffed and said, “You’re not in orthopedics.”   I said, “Really? Well, I never said I was in orthopedic medicine. But I absolutely AM in orthopedics.”   He begged to differ, so I quickly saw myself out of the conversation.    … Read more

Normal

Dooley Noted: 10/28/2015    Yesterday, we had our first lab at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.    The faculty was introduced to the M1 class before our first lab.    Dr. Sodofsky, a brilliant pathologist, gave a golden piece of advice for the students who would soon be studying a cadaver patient, head to toe.    He encouraged them to understand that normal doesn’t really exist.   “There is no normal…only ranges.”   I found … Read more

Wanting to Want

Dooley Noted: 10/27/2015   One of my first questions to my patients is asking what they want to accomplish.   I hear many goals, and I see many people attacking them head on. Human potential never shocks me.   Other people surprise me with their self-defeat.   They state they want a goal, and we develop a highly individualized way for them to achieve the goal.    And they self-sabotage it.   They skip workouts. … Read more

Continuing Education

Dooley Noted: 10/26/2015   I am currently teaching anatomy 5 days a week between 3 different schools.    I spend most of my weekends teaching seminar courses.    I spend the rest of the weekends taking courses or improving my skill sets.    So, I thought it was ironic when the New York State Office of Professions audited me, asking for proof I had completed my minimum continuing education requirements for my chiropractic license.   … Read more

Working for Yourself

Dooley Noted: 10/24/15   While teaching in Toronto this weekend, I got to spend some quality time with another NKT therapist and incredible human named Lisa Burnfield.    Last January, Lisa made the long- anticipated jump of leaving her associate position and going out on her own to run a physiotherapy clinic.    She noted that her boyfriend, Brian Kotoka, was a huge influence for her, opening his own amazing fitness studio, Thrive, just 6 … Read more
