The Quiet Noise

Dooley Noted: 8/21/15 I am a strong woman. But I get in my own way. Two greats in my life – Joe Boffi and Jake LoTurco – pointed out that I have a self-sabotaging technique. They noticed it in the same 24-hour period, in different cities, on different lifts. On a heavy deadlift,  the pull initiation felt so heavy. Unknowingly, I shook my head as I was pulling. It was in the middle of the … Read more

Customer Service in Health Care

Dooley Noted: 8/19/2015 For 13 years, I ran an independent business as a mystery shopper. I wanted to have a flexible schedule and make a good income. I did those things. But what I learned shaped the way I offered service to my patients and students. I learned that quality customer service doesn’t just promote a product. It can promote human character. James, the barista at my local Starbucks, doesn’t just know my name. He … Read more

The Airway and the Front Squat

Dooley Noted: 8/18/2015 I don’t jump for joy on Front Squat Day. It hurts in several ways. It leaves me with bruises on my clavicle. My business partner, the great Joe Boffi, hears this and says, “Get bigger delts, Dooley.” I want to grip the bar with my might, as I am encouraged to leave my fingers loose. Joe Boffi hears this and says, “Stop gripping the bar, Dooley, and get your elbows up.” I … Read more

The White Lies

Dooley Noted: 8/17/2015   I have felt immensely hurt by the truth.    And I have felt the deep, twisted cut of lies.    I had a discussion with my friend this morning about when lies are acceptable.    He had an interesting perspective.    “If the truth makes the person more anxious in the present and has no benefit for the future, then why give the whole truth?”   I understand this concept: the … Read more

Taking Off the Clips

Dooley Noted: 8/16/2015   Today, I did technique drilling with 225 pounds in the conventional deadlift.   For my people that don’t lift weights, don’t tune out. This is important.   My friend with whom I was lifting suggested I keep the clips off as I was lifting.   I had never done that before, at least on the deadlift. I liked the security of feeling the weight being completely against the midline.   But … Read more

Panic

Dooley Noted: 8/15/2015    This morning, I fell short.    I’ll set the scene.    I was not at my best, going on two hours of sleep.    My friend and I were urgently getting to the airport, but we were set to be on time.    I found we were lucky, getting a cab at 5 AM.    But the cab driver was not on point.    Things started calmly enough, with we steering … Read more

Selfless Love

Dooley Noted: 8/12/2015   I’ll admit it: I am inherently selfish.   I have to work hard to bring forth selfless love.    It’s a beautiful thing, when you can put your own wants aside for the needs of someone else.   While it is important to have your own needs met, there must be more to life than satisfying basic needs.   Why else did we evolve?   I’m fascinated by the concept of … Read more

Why I Study Chinese Medicine

Dooley Noted: 8/11/2015   My interest in acupuncture started in chiropractic school.    I received a 300-hour certification in acupuncture after attending 8 weekend seminars on the subject.    I then sat for an acupuncture board examination to allow me to practice it as a chiropractor in 47 out of 50 states.   Knowing the theory and practice of Chinese medicine ran deeper than 8 weekends, I knew I had the Cliffs Notes version of … Read more

The Harder Life

Dooley Noted: 8/10/15   All of my patients have one thing in common:    They’ve usually seen and tried “everything else” before coming to see me.    Now, if I were some magician, some magic bullet therapist, then they’d come see me first.    But I’m simply the person who finds out what is hard for them to do – then encourages them to do it with efficiency.    Why have they not done this … Read more

Recovering from Injury

Dooley Noted: 8/9/2015   Last November, I awoke with right arm pain. I was unable to post a getup with my bodyweight on my right arm.   I couldn’t press a 10 kg kettle bell without pain.   I had wonderful clinicians and coaches in my army, so I worked around the injury.   There were pervasive thoughts that I would never press again with my right arm.   I quieted the thoughts with the … Read more
