On Thankfulness: 2015

Dooley Noted: 11/26/2015   This year has been a storm of difficulty and wonder, despair and happiness. No matter which way the pendulum swings, I am always grateful for the lessons I learn.    This is not a comprehensive list. I’ve imbibed a bit, so forgive me if I forgot something crucial.    I am thankful…   1. …for the full recovery from two injuries that threatened to sideline my strength.    2. …for the … Read more

People Who’ve Changed Me: Part 50

Dooley Noted: 11/25/2015   The Person: Isang Smith     Her Profession: Olympic-level sprinter, licensed massage therapist for Catalyst SPORT, masters student of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).    How I know her: I met Isang when Fabian Cabrera, a masterful trainer, brought her to Catalyst SPORT to treat clients, a large bulk of which were from the NYC running community.     How she’s changed me:  Isang is a phenomenal sprinter and an even better person. She … Read more

Laying Foundations

Dooley Noted: 11/24/2015   Times they are a changing.   We are about to round out our first year of laying the foundation for our exciting new seminar series, Immaculate Dissection.   We are into our second year of helping people move well, pain-free and often at Catalyst SPORT.    And I’m embarking on the most exciting romantic relationship of my life.    All three are in their formative stages.   Laying a foundation can … Read more

Strength in Numbers

Dooley Noted: 11/23/2015   Two years ago, I could press the 20 kilo kettle bell once on each side. I forced a 22 kilo to go up on one side – only to get my SFG II certification. And it wasn’t pretty.    I knew back then I could do better. But doing better meant listening to people who are stronger than I and trusting them to design a program that I must follow to … Read more

Bodybuilding Versus Movement Training

Dooley Noted: 11/22/2015   I am a movement specialist. Catalyst SPORT is built upon the principle of teaching authentic human movement in a safe environment with minimal equipment.    Therefore, I had abandoned my former days of using bodybuilding as part of my training.   I had been coached into phrases of dogmatic thinking by our world of movement professionals, like, “Train movement – not muscles,” and, “We train movements – we don’t build statues.” … Read more

Anatomy Angel: Jaw Protrusion/Retrusion and Center of Mass

Dooley Noted: 11/21/2015   In a recent NKT study group, we discussed how overbite (jaw retrusion) and underbite (jaw protrusion) can affect the intrinsic and extrinsic core systems, creating global compensations in the kinetic chain.   The lateral and medial pterygoids are the chief muscles of protrusion of the mandible. The superficial head of the masseter acts as a secondary synergist to their action.        Protrusion = Pterygoids  (Remember that the Ps go together!) … Read more

People Who’ve Changed Me: Part 49

Dooley Noted: 11/19/2015   The Person: Malke Klein     Her Profession: Licensed Massage Therapist   How I know her:  I had the honor of introducing NKT Level II to Malke when Perry Nickleston and I co-led the seminar in NYC two years ago.    In class, she asked all the right questions. I knew she was a dynamo. She ended up a fixture at study groups, and she soon became a training client with kettlebells. … Read more

Marriage Worth Watching

Dooley Noted: 11/18/2015      This is a world of expendable connections.   I watch people swipe left and right, just based on a picture and an instinct.   I see apparently blissful couples bragging about their relationship, just to separate the moment things get rocky.   In the past, I’ve been guilty of discontinuing a union when he didn’t fit my picture of things I desire – before I’d even given the guy a … Read more

Contrast to the Darkness

Dooley Noted: 11/17/2015   When people see me, I am told they see an enormously bright light – particularly when I teach.    Some wish to put it out.    Others gravitate to it and learn with me.    Either way, it’s blinding – until you learn to let it light your path.    I know the reason it shines so brightly.    The darkest time of my life was in my first year of … Read more

The Perfect Gait

Dooley Noted: 11/16/2015   I spend a fair amount of time each day analyzing gait (otherwise known as the way you move).    I’ve done this for a number of years, and I’m just recently hitting my groove of understanding it.    New York is like a massive case study of n=8 million.    And if I let myself watch them, I make attempts to predict where they may be currently – or in the … Read more
