Cadavers and Racism

Dooley Noted: 8/2/2016   We are in troubled times of race wars.   As an Indiana girl, I had a purely Caucasian elementary and high school, sans one adopted African-American girl.   Confederate flags were flown in trucks – even though Indiana was part of the North. That made most of us laugh at the irony.    Racial tensions didn’t seem high, though, because there wasn’t much race diversity.   Only the prejudice was flowing, … Read more

Gram Crackers

Dooley Noted: 7/31/2016   This weekend, I stayed in a lovely hot spring resort and made s’mores with my husband.   As I tasted the tender crisp graham cracker, I was shuttled back to my childhood.   I could remember being around 7 years old, rummaging through the cabinets under my grandmother’s sink.   I was searching for her graham crackers, which, as a child, I assumed were called “Gram” crackers.   After all, she’s … Read more

The Baby Girl

Dooley Noted: 7/29/2016   My mother was the baby girl, the last born of her parents.   So was I.   As I heard her stories of growing up, I envisioned my uncles chasing and teasing her.   I also envisioned them looking out for her.   With such a distance between my sisters and me, I had more solo time with my mother than the other girls.    I found the similarities between us … Read more

Hitting Yourself

Dooley Noted: 7/28/2016   I have never been the victim of domestic abuse.   I consider myself lucky.   But in turn, I spent most of my life hitting myself.    I never had a hand of discipline restricting me, so I learned to use my own psychology to keep myself in my place.   Unfortunately, any blame I could have dispersed to the outside world was internalized.    The beatdowns started at a young … Read more

Why You Don’t Wake Up To Use the Bathroom

Dooley Noted: 7/27/2016   Each day, I read patient intakes that note they wake up at night to urinate.    Many of them reduce their nighttime water intake, with the hypothesis it will prevent them from waking.   Unless they have been diagnosed with nocturnal enuresis (bed wetting), then the most likely case is that they don’t wake to urinate.   You have this incredible ability to inhibit nighttime urination once you are unconscious. This … Read more

On Partnership

Dooley Noted: 7/26/2016    I worked and lived alone off and on for many years.   As I partnered with my colleagues at Catalyst SPORT, I learned quickly that the sum is greater than the parts. Being part of a strong team shows that the members are mutually enhancing.    The same is true for our Immaculate Dissection seminar family, which is expanding week by week.    By myself, I can help some people.    … Read more

Why Your Small Disc Herniation Shouldn’t Worry You

Dooley Noted: 7/24/2016   This image is making its way around the internet today.   The findings from the high impact factored, peer-reviewed journal, Spine, showed that over 86.7% of cervical disc herniations were asymptomatic.   Although the research clearly shows this truth, pain is often explained by radiographic findings by their doctors and therapists.   It’s time to stop this madness.   Disc herniations occur due to excessive motion at one segment without load-sharing … Read more

The Power of Appreciation

Dooley Noted: 7/23/2016 These past few days teaching in Taiwan have been like a beautiful dream.  After four days of intense anatomy lectures with assessments and correctives, we were taken to dinner every evening by Michael Cheng’s amazing team at the BOA group.  They filled the table with toasts, gifts and laughter. They even presented us with a beautiful plaque of appreciation.  Appreciation is infectious. Their gestures simply made me want to appreciate everything around … Read more

The Patient Student

Dooley Noted: 7/22/2016 For the past three days, I’ve had the honor and privilege of co-teaching Immaculate Dissection anatomy concepts in Taiwan.  The students have this incredible quality that I rarely see.  They are patient with their understanding.  They let me speak about the lecture material, and they don’t consistently interrupt lecture.  They never go tangential with their questions.  They respect our team as their teachers, and they let us show them our concepts – … Read more

The Shortcut

Dooley Noted: 7/21/2016   Yesterday, I watched as Danny Quirk painted my husband’s thigh for ID II.    Our conversation wandered to many topics, but one was westward expansion and the Donner party.    As I researched the Donner party, I was fascinated by the detriment of a group of people taking a shortcut.    The shortcut put months and months on their trip, causing many to die of starvation and to resort to cannibalism … Read more
