Last to Board

Dooley Noted: 7/8/2014 I am absolutely the last to board any flight. Forget Priority Access. I don’t make it a priority to be the first on a flight to sit down. I will let everyone else walk single file as they wait to board. I will gladly stay in a nearby corner, doing breathing drills, gait stretches, push-ups, pistols, and mobility drills. While you wait for everyone else to hurry onto the plane, remember that … Read more

What About Your Friends

Dooley Noted: 7/6/2014 It had been 12 years since my friends Lee Ditsworth, Shannon Burton and I had been together. Old friends getting together is always special. Laughing, silliness, and life recaps always ensue. But these two men have shaped my life in ways I can never repay. Lee tutored me in college physics. He won’t admit it, but he taught me to learn from failure. He also taught me the patience needed when being … Read more

Independence from the Storm

Dooley Noted: 7/4/2014 It started yesterday at 5 pm, with a flight delay due to the hurricane. I put off mailing my rent. I then beat myself up for it for the next hour. Sound ridiculous? In retrospect, it was. But it wasn’t without its importance with what transpired. In the past and present, I haven’t experienced many people putting pressure on me to succeed. I can’t think of a single person that pressured me. … Read more

The Great Sigh

Dooley Noted: 7/3/2014 After class yesterday, I quickly sent an important email and replied to an urgent text, moving from one thing to the next. I felt myself stand, smile, and sigh the great sigh. My professor noticed, and asked, “Kathy, are you okay?” Dooley: “Yes ma’am, I’ve never been so great.” So, what’s in a sigh? Chinese medicine demarcates sighing as a sign of stagnation, namely in the liver highway system. Sighing is an … Read more

The Patient I Don’t Touch

Dooley Noted: 7/2/2014 One of my most impressive patients is one I’m not permitted to touch. Because of religious reasons, he could not shake my hand upon meeting me. He informed me we were not allowed to touch. At first, I thought to myself: “How can I provide manual therapy without touching my patient?” I admit, I didn’t see that coming. But I wasn’t about to turn him away. He was referred specifically to me, … Read more

Finding a Home

Dooley Noted: 7/1/2014 After a year of planning, I finally have an office to call home, within a gym I co-own named Catalyst S.P.O.R.T. I suppose it’s the closest I will ever feel to having a newborn. I knew it would have stresses, but I can’t even feel them. It’s quickly become a place I care about with infinite concern and endless love and commitment. Yesterday, I found myself happily humming as I picked up … Read more

My Personal Experience with Manual Therapy

Dooley Noted: 6/30/2014 At age 21, I received my first chiropractic adjustment. It was so beneficial that I changed my career goals in order to become a doctor of chiropractic. While in school, I was equally fascinated and discouraged. I loved the science and autonomy to help with nutrition and movement care. However, I was frustrated by the consistently passive manual therapy techniques and requests to see patients several times a week for these treatments. … Read more

NKT at Catalyst S.P.O.R.T.

Dooley Noted: 6/29/2014 This weekend, I had the honor of assisting my boss and mentor, David Weinstock, at our yearly East Coast NeuroKinetic Therapy (NKT) Level III seminar. It was an extraordinary seminar, as was every NKT I’ve ever attended. But this one was special. I was surrounded by some of the most experienced NKT practitioners from all across the country – and some from around the world, like Australia, Canada, Morocco, and England. I … Read more

My First Experience with Floatation

Dooley Noted: 6/28/2014 Yesterday, I had my first experience with a Floatation Bath. This includes a concentrated magnesium sulfate bath (think Epsom salt) in a sensory deprived environment. I grew up taking baths, so I can literally stay in a tub for hours. Thus, I expected to enjoy this experience right out of the gate. I was surprised at what transpired. A very kind gentleman named Sam explained the process, a service he has provided … Read more

Therapy as Aspirin

Dooley Noted: 6/25/2014 I am not a magician. I am also not a healer. There will be no laying on of hands as the gods infuse you with healing while you lay on my treatment table. I don’t seek to create a voodoo experience that gives you a moment of relief, just to see you in discomfort on your ride home. Will you leave my office feeling better? It’s highly likely. But I won’t give … Read more
