Sharks in the Water

Dooley Noted: 5/26/2015   You will work hard to achieve your goals.     You will work tirelessly and put the best of intentions into your job.     And many people will benefit from your care and efforts.     But there are sharks in the water.     People will build you up to kick the pedestal down – for their own amusement.     Sometimes, it’s jealousy that fuels that fire.     … Read more

Embracing Struggle

Dooley Noted: 5/24/2015 We all know life isn’t easy.  Every person you know is struggling with something.  How we face our battles helps to define us in present time. Our struggles are important.  If you are battling pain – or just trying to achieve a goal – I hope you watch this.  You don’t have to watch all 7 minutes of me attempting to rip this 1500-page phone book.  But if you do, you will … Read more

The Gift of Strength

Dooley Noted: 5/23/2015 For some people it is not enough just to get strong. They need to give strength to someone else. This happens every day at Catalyst SPORT. But Wednesday, the gift of strength was big enough to shock me. My business partner, Jason Kapnick, is an elite powerlifter.   Training for meets is a huge focal point of his life. Training never takes a back seat, and he approaches it with utmost diligence. … Read more

Treatment Magic

Dooley Noted: 5/22/2015 It’s wonderful when someone’s pain vanishes after a few visits.  When you can help some people get better in this short duration, it seems magical.  Expectations are high for therapists such as myself, especially when we are an out of pocket expense.  I know that with almost everyone, I only get one visit to show results for them to keep trying the system.  And not everyone gets better in one visit.  Pain … Read more

The Octogenarian Skill Set

Dooley Noted: 5/21/2015   Yesterday, I had the honor of helping an amazing acupuncture intern treat a woman in her late eighties.     Picture that scene for a second.     I don’t have to guess how wrong your picture is.     This woman was bubbly and vibrant, with fiery red, curly hair pinned back from her glowing face with a colorful headband.     She was dressed in workout clothes, and she … Read more

Awareness Hell

Dooley Noted: 5/19/2015 Patients make great observations.  Yesterday, one patient pointed out to me just how much ignorance is bliss. She stated how she was an athletic person – until she got hurt.  Dealing with the pain was arduous, and she shirked medications to better understand why she felt her pain.  So she went to a meditation retreat to try and understand her body sensations.  She said she entered Awareness Hell.  As she became acutely … Read more

One-Legged Lateral Hip Activation Drill

Video Dooley Noted: 5/18/2015  In this video segment of Dooley Noted, I discuss one-legged activation drills for the lateral hip.  Frontal (side-to-side) plane activation of the hip sometimes gets ignored in training, allowing the body to quickly trade off back movement for hip movement.  To protect both the back and hip in this plane, progress to this drill.  Regressions are seen in a separate video called “Glute Medius Activation.” Enjoy! As always, it’s your call.  … Read more

Pain as a Lesson

Dooley Noted: 5/16/2015 Since November, I have lived with two great pains that threatened to squash my strength goals.     And I did a pretty great job of earning them.     I earned some stability and strength discrepancies.     I absolutely knew they were there before the pain came.     I could press more with my right arm.     I couldn’t pistol as well with my right leg.     … Read more

Crooked Arm Bar for Lats

Video Dooley Noted: 5/14/2015 In this week’s video segment of Dooley Noted, I discuss engaging the lats in the frontal and sagittal planes with the crooked arm bar. Often miscued, lat engagement is often traded for scapular retraction and elevation.  Since the lat performs no direct actions on the scapula, consider this drill to help your clients actually feel the lat engage.  Enjoy! – Dr. Kathy Dooley

The Overhead Work

Dooley Noted: 5/13/2015 I fly frequently these days.  Almost every weekend, I get to watch people avoid checking luggage by overstuffing their carry-ons.  I see countless women struggling to get their heavy bags in the overhead compartment. Many women won’t even make an attempt. They will ask a nearby person to help them place it in the overhead bin.  And it’s always a male that they ask.  Yesterday, I had a woman look right through … Read more
