The Birth of a Catalyst

Dooley Noted: 7/1/2015   One year ago, my entire life changed in a way I never could have imagined.    We officially opened the doors to Catalyst SPORT.   We created the environment in which we always wanted to do good work.   We had five major needs to give to our clients:   Strength. Performance. Orthopedics. Rehabilitation. Training.   We knew that most pain and injury were caused by deficits in the power trifecta … Read more

Strength and Resiliency

Dooley Noted: 6/30/2015   Yesterday was a strong day.  After an amazing weekend of teaching the Immaculate Dissection seminar series, Monday was full of amazing patients and a strong workout.    But at 2 AM this morning, I woke with what I believe was food poisoning.   I felt like all the strength was zapped from me by a little bug. So, I took the morning off to recover.    I checked my mail and … Read more

Patients Aren’t Stupid

Dooley Noted: 6/29/2015   The vast majority of my patients are sent to me by referral.  So, they walk in with high expectations.    Sometimes, they believe I am some magical sorceress, appearing in their lives to take away all discomfort.    I’m no mystical healer. (Sorry to disappoint.)   But they always leave with an education.    What they all have in common is that other practitioners have assumed they didn’t want to know … Read more

Pain and Respiration

Dooley Noted: 6/28/2015   I’m always concerned when my patients are using narcotics like opioids to treat their pain.   Opioids classically cause respiratory depression. Since most chronic pain is linked to hypoxia, it makes no sense to me to treat pain with something that depresses your ability to get more oxygen.   Most of us think we breathe pretty well. After all, we do it without thinking, right?    For me that’s a big … Read more

Outliving Your Doctor

Dooley Noted: 6/27/2015 This week, I was honored to assist an acupuncture intern that was treating an 82 year-old patient.  The patient complained about very little. She had utilized acupuncture and other holistic care for decades.  She noted her doctors said that it wouldn’t really help, but they gave her permission to do it.  She also noted that she was on one medication, while many of her friends were on several medications.  She said she … Read more

The Time Warp

Dooley Noted: 6/25/2015 On Monday and Tuesday, I was very stressed about the idea of time.  I was rushing like a mad woman, trying to make deadlines.  Then, last night, proof arrived to show me that time is not the least bit linear. All it took was a call from an old friend. Despite the 14-hour workday, I had no qualms at all about staying up very late to talk to my friend. I was … Read more

People Who’ve Changed Me: Part 28

Dooley Noted: 6/24/2015   The Person: Dr. Todd Olson    Profession: Course director of anatomy at Albert Einstein College of Oriental Medicine    How I know him:  Dr. Olson and Dr. Robert Walker started a pilot program for a Master’s of Science in Clinical Anatomy program at NYCC, for which I was chosen as the first fellow.    How he’s changed me: We like to think that dreams magically come true. Mine haven’t been that … Read more

Anatomy Angel: Gastrocnemius

Dooley Noted: 6/23/15   The gastrocnemius is a two-bellied, powerful muscle that forms 2/3 of the triceps surae, along with the soleus.      The triceps surae form the most powerful plantar flexors of the ankle, allowing one to propel forward off the back foot during gait, sprinting, jumping, and other propulsive activities.     The gastrocnemius is the multi-joint muscle of the triceps surae, moving both the talocrural (upper ankle) joint and the knee. … Read more

Why You Should Do What You Hate

Dooley Noted: 6/22/2015   I source help for my personal training program writing from my amazing business partners, Joe Boffi and Jason Kapnick.    Since they are two of the finest athletes and coaches I’ve ever met, I trust them implicitly.    So, I was not surprised at all that barbell front squats showed up in my program.    They both know I hate them.    So, they put them twice in my training week. … Read more

An Apology to My Father

Dooley Noted: 6/21/2015   Today is the day where everyone is noting the greatness of their fathers.   It’s wonderful.    But on this Father’s Day, I feel I owe mine an apology.    So, I’m going to focus more on what I missed.   My entire life, my father has been trying to teach me how to be strong.   And I don’t necessarily mean the figurative sense.   My father never had bulging … Read more
